Health & Safety Courses

The American Red Cross provides First Aid, CPR and AED programs to give you the confidence to respond in an emergency situation with skills that can save a life. These programs are available for any age and can be tailored to the needs of specific groups and individuals.

Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Essentials

This course allows participants to become familiar with the use of Automated External Defibrillation (AED) for victims of cardiac arrest and how to safely operate the device.

CPR - Adult

Learn to give rescue breathing, PR and response to choking for the adult victim. This course is taught by using instructor demonstration, videotape and manikin practice.

CPR - Adult, Infant & Child

CPR - Child & Epinephrine Injection

Learn how to give rescue breathing, care for a choking victim and administer CPR to child age 1 - 12 yrs. Also learn how to recognize the signs of allergic reaction and how to administer an EpiPen. Strongly recommended for parents of children with severe allergic reactions.

(Please note that this class does not meet the requirements for the State of Connecticut medical administration program for daycare providers. The program is designed for parents of children with allergic reactions.

CPR - Infant & Child

Learn how to give rescue breathing, care for a choking victim and administer CPR to an infant and/or child. Special emphasis placed on injury prevention. recommended for parents and day care providers.

CPR w/AED - Adult

This course allows participants to become familiar with the use of Automated External Defibrillation (AED) for victims of cardiac arrest and how to safely operate the device.

CPR w/AED - Adult, Infant & Child

Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, rescue breathing and how to care for a choking adult, infant and/or child victim. This course also teaches individuals the skills and knowledge needed to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

CPR w/AED for the Professional Rescuer

This course teaches professional rescuers the skills needed to respond appropriately to respiratory and cardiac emergencies, including the use of an automated external defibrillator for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Students will also learn how to use a pocket mask and bag-valve resuscitator.

Standard First Aid (First Aid Basics)

Learn bandaging, splinting, and treatment for sudden illness. It is recommended that participants possess a current CPR certificate before taking this course.

Challenges

Come prepared to take the written and practical skills test. There is no teaching of skills during a challenge. You may only take a "challenge" one time. Caregiving Programs

Caregiving programs help people develop the skills and knowledge to care for themselves and others.

Babysitter's Training

Youth learn the responsibilities of a babysitter, child development stages, child care, activities for children, accident prevention and basic first aid. Open to boys and girls ages 11 to 15.

Back Injury Prevention

Understand the anatomy of the back and the causes of back pain. Identify and reduce risk factors for back injury. Learn how to perform simple exercises for stretching and strengthening neck and back muscles to help prevent back injury. Identify ways to change personal habits to avoid back injury.

CT Child Care

A state approved course to prepare daycare personnel how to prevent accidents, administer first aid, recognize the signs and symptoms of childhood illness. In addition, you will learn how to give rescue breathing, care for choking victim and perform CPR on a infant and/or child.

Dog & Cat First Aid (formally Pet First Aid)

This class will teach you the information you need to keep your pet safe and to act with confidence during an emergency. Subjects covered in the class include proper emergency procedures, identifying problems requiring immediate attention, and how to keep your pet healthy. The class fee includes a one Dog First Aid book and DVD and one Cat First Aid book and DVD developed by the American Red Cross.

Dog First Aid

The class covers emergency prevention as well as immediate first aid actions for dogs until professional veterinarian can provide medical care. The class fee includes a Dog First Aid book and DVD developed by the American Red Cross.

Cat First Aid

Sports Safety Training

Designed to help coaches, athletic trainers and other participants identify and eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in various sports environments, recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. (Includes Adult & Child CPR)

Together We Prepare

The Together We Prepare initiative encourages five actions that every individual and family should take to better prepare themselves for an emergency or disaster. This presentation is ideal for individuals who want to learn lifesaving skills but do not need to receive certification.

The purpose of this course is to introduce participants to the concept of emergency preparedness, including the need to plan for emergencies, to stay safe and for building and maintaining a disaster supplies kit. In this course participants will also learn the principles of first aid.

Wilderness First Aid & When Help is Delayed

Designed for situations where the response time for professional help is anticipated to be more than 30 minutes, this course is perfect for Scout Leaders, outdoor enthusiasts of all types, camp councilors and anyone whose work or play takes them off the beaten path.

Lifeguard Training

This core course will teach you the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This course includes certification in First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation, Preventing Disease Transmission, and Lifeguard Training.
